FLEXIBLE FACADE

Student Project:

Proposal for a residential building with commercial components on ground level on a derelict site situated within diverse surroundings in Berlin, Germany. By collaborating with classmates to craft a coherent masterplan, we established a manifesto to create a community within a community. The most prevalent issue was how to introduce a residential complex that didn’t feel out of context and grants the users true senses of ownership and identity. My building massing serves two main purposes: to frame the courtyard space at the center of our site and to encourage movement throughout the rest of the exterior open spaces. Being centered around this activity, I designed my building interior to accommodate a wide range of tenants and flat sizes. This diversity is displayed through the deceptively revealing facade system. Flexible management of sun, light, privacy were the drivers behind this system as well as the goal of creating a facade that possessed a lively character and has the potential to evolve throughout the day, night. Wooden floor to ceiling panels rotate outwards revealing an interior membrane of fenestration, exposed concrete, and balconies. The voids between the wooden panels are larger when correlating to the living, balcony spaces and smaller when associated with the more private functions such as bedrooms and bathrooms.
